Albums 2015

Sometimes, you just have to listen to what you listen to, in order to write a music countdown. There have been times in the past I tried to be a music editor and not a music lover. This particular time, I'm counting down my 20 favorite albums of the year 2015, along with some beloved lyrics. Enjoy, bitchez.

Tinashe - Aquarius

There is no point to focus on a fresh r'n'b album, without ending up with comparisons with things you have listened to in the past twenty years. Let's be honest, there is no "new sound" in contemporary r'n'b, unless you are Janelle Monae or FKA Twigs or at least Miguel. The majority of all the neo-soul, post-dubstep, electronic-soul, rap-sung, hip-hop albums out there have probably the same 808 kicks and synth pads from the same laptop. So which is the x-factor that makes a Beyonce or a Jessie Ware album brilliant, but a Chris Brown or a Robin Thicke album simply boring?

That x-factor is called "personality". It's easy to state the obvious and say "But, come on, Rihanna has a big personality and does her own thing and does not give a fuck, blah, bluh, bleh...". That's true. But what have all these No 1 artists done so that they don't record the same tracks over and over again with different lyrics and tempo? How many of them have taken the leap of faith and risk their beauty or their voice or even their fanbase, in order to create something they can call their own and not the industry's? Well, to sum up, Tinashe could have been the new Ciara or the new Rihanna or even the new Christina. But she is not. Because she has taken that leap of faith, the same that Janelle and Jessie and Twigs have taken in the past few years. Plus, she is hot, but this is not the case.

"Aquarius" is an album that makes you dance, makes you have sex, makes you wet, makes you notice the production and the powerful Mariah-esque vocals, makes you push the "repeat" button, makes you addicted to it and its performer charms. Tinashe has mentioned that her favorite album of hers is "The Velvet Rope" by Janet Jackson. And this is actually the best comparison as far as this album is concerned. It's as old-fashioned as Janet's smooth and soulful music, but at the same time the singer embraces the new era, thus being edgy, angry, hip and 2015.

"Bet", probably the strongest mid-tempo song in the project, gives Beyonce and Solange a reason to sue Blood Orange for not delivering the demo to their managers. "2 on", the first single of the album, is as urban as it can be and a top-30 hit in the Billboard Hot 100. In "All hands on deck" Tinashe delivers a solid vocal performance, accompanied by a flute loop, a raw bassline and some killer synths, while "Far side of the moon" is a track that even the duo of Timbaland/Justin could be jealous of.

If you are a fan of the r'n'b genre, you will adore this album if you haven't already. Tinashe should be the biggest female act of 2015 if there's any music justice out there. And if there's not, oh well... let's count on the Universe's poetic one.

Various Artists - The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 (OST)

Let's start with the fact that Lorde has released a second album or a new EP or something through the "The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 OST". But let's not stick to that, cause it's more ironic than realistic - she has only recorded three new songs plus one remix by her idol, Kanye Kardashian.

The second weird thing about this collection of songs has to do with the really out of the blue collaborations - Ariana Grande with Major Lazer, Charli XCX with Simon Le Bon, The Chemical Brothers with Miguel, Q-Tip with HAIM and Lorde (again, duh). So this is also a crossover project or at least an obvious effort to bridge many different music genres and generations. And that's a wrap, to the point now...

The soundtrack album for the third installment in "The Hunger Games" film series is quite good and consistent actually, despite the Lorde domination (yeap, I will never stop) and the unexpected collaborations. Grace Jones delivers a unique performance in the beautifully produced "Original beast" (I think that even without her vocals, this track still has her signature). "Lost souls" by Raury works as a smart bridge for the tracks in the second half of the album. Tinashe makes you wanna have sex in public. The Chemical Brothers make you feel haunted by the paganism of "This is not a game" (with vocals by Miguel), while Lorde is really like a ghost through the whole album. A ghost that contributes vocals and sounds even in other artists' tracks.

Lorde has been recruited to curate the album. So it's a bit honest that she has control over all the recordings in here. So she has done a very good job. So the whole "oh, Lorde again" joke is... well, a joke. Please, myself, stop teasing Lorde, for the love of Lord(e).

Jessie Ware - Tough Love

Jessie Ware is not a pop artist. But she is not a soul artist either. Mainstream audiences have not yet embraced the "Devotion" album as they were supposed to do (except for her crossover hit "Wildest Moments" of course). But, let's face it, she is not an alternative artist either, such as other similar acts in the UK (FKA Twigs or Lianne La Havas). Actually, that's the beauty of her music. It's soulful/electronic pop music that anyone can listen to - from GaGa and Aretha fans to Blood Orange and SBTRKT lovers.

The sophomore album for the singer is her effort to be more radio-friendly and, obviously, to sell more records. That's not bad, of course, considering that the songs are actually good. The unfortunate thing with "Tough Love" is that it's like a mirror with two faces. Half the songs remind you of the reasons you have loved her voice, her melodies and her electronic soul touch and the other half showcase a new artist that collaborates with Ed Sheeran and Miguel, in order to produce hit singles. Sometimes, as she sings, you forget all that crap. But if you listen to it over and over again, you can easily guess that in two years time she will release an Adele-esque album to pursue a diva career. Well, ok, maybe not.

"Say you love me", the second single from the album and the most successful one for the singer to date, is co-written by Ed Sheeran, so that the "Wildest moments" song would be jealous of its sequel. The first track with Miguel, "You and I (forever)", is something you could expect from her as far as the production is concerned, but the second one, "Kind Of...Sometimes...Maybe", is definitely something Miguel had planned to record himself and he didn't for some reason. "Want your feeling" and "Keep on lying" are probably the best tracks here, vocally and musically, while the power ballad "Pieces" could and should be a part of a Mariah or a Celine release - too much drama.

It's unfair to believe an artist is willing to repeat something he or she has done in the past, in order to play safe. And it's also unfair not to appreciate this album, cause at the end of the day it's all about good music. So maybe I have given Jessie some tough love with what I have written so far. Actually, me likey the album, even though there are two of them in here.

Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady

Η Janelle Monae είναι παράξενη ιστορία, αλλά θα μας απασχολήσει σε λιγάκι.

Όταν το 1998 έκανε την εμφάνισή της η Lauryn Hill, ούτε η πρώτη ήταν που έκανε παλαιομοδίτικες hip hop-soul ηχογραφήσεις (άκου "Baduism" από Erykah Badu), ούτε το "The miseducation of..." ήταν η πρώτη της δισκογραφική κυκλοφορία (η αποθέωση με τους The Fugees είχε έρθει από το 1996), ούτε έκανε κάτι που κανείς άλλος δεν είχε σκεφτεί (αν μη τι άλλο, μέσα στα 90's η Mary J Blige ήταν η βασίλισσα των μαύρων charts). Η Lauryn Hill ήταν σαφώς όμως η πρώτη γυναίκα στην ευρύτερη contemporary & traditional r'n'b μουσική που είχε τον πλήρη έλεγχο ενός ολόκληρου δίσκου, έγραψε μουσική, έκανε παραγωγή, έκανε concept album σε μια εποχή που κανείς δεν τολμούσε, έκανε 548 διαφορετικά layers φωνητικών σε κάθε track, έκανε ραπ όπως καμία άλλη και έβαλε τον πήχη τόση ψηλά για τις τραγουδιάρες της μαύρης μουσικής, που δικαίως θεωρήθηκε πρωτοπόρος, διαχώρισε τον εαυτό της από τα άλλα δύο μέλη των The Fugees και σάρωσε ό,τι βραβείο βρέθηκε μπροστά της.

Κανείς δεν μπορεί να γίνει Χαλίφης στη θέση του Χαλίφη. Μόνο που μπορεί. Γιατί η Janelle Monae έχει φτάσει αυτόν τον πήχη της Lauryn Hill και μάλιστα δύο φορές. Με το "The Archandroid" πριν δύο χρόνια και φέτος με το "The Electric Lady". Κι ενώ σε καμία περίπτωση δεν έχει φτάσει το hype της Lauryn, είναι τόσο ταλαντούχα κι εργατική, που κάθε φορά απορείς πως μπορεί και συνθέτει κάτω από ένα ενιαίο concept τόσα πράγματα, τόσες συνεργασίες, τόσα διαφορετικα μουσικά προφίλ και τόσα outfits (duh).

Η ηλεκτρική κυρία, το τέταρτο και πέμπτο μέρος από τα 7 του "Metropolis" concept (υπάρχουν και EP για τα πρώτα μέρη) κινείται στα ίδια πλαίσια με το "The Archandroid", οπότε μην περιμένεις να ακούσεις λάτιν σούστες με αρπίχορδο. Η soulful, mid-tempo βάση των περισσότερων κομματιών δίνει τη θέση της σε funk κιθάρες και up-tempo καταστάσεις, όπως το "Dance apocalyptic", ενώ αρκετά ιντερλούδια φλερτάρουν με τις ορχήστρες, κάτι που η Monae δείχνει να απολαμβάνει και να ενσωματώνει με ό,τι κυκλοφορεί.

Τα μηνύματα στέκονται με σθένος απέναντι στον ρατσισμό και τις διακρίσεις σε όποιο επίπεδο και θα το καταλάβεις αν δεν κάνεις skip τα ιντερλούδια, αλλά τα ακούσεις προσεκτικά, για να κατανοήσεις τι θέλει να πει η δημιουργός και πώς έχει στήσει όλη την επταλογία...

Οι συνεργασίες παριλαμβάνουν τον Prince, την Erykah Badu, τον Miguel, τη Solange και την Esperanza Spalding, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι δεν στηρίχτηκε αμιγώς στις δυνάμεις της, αλλά πήρε όλη την black alternativa των charts (είναι ευνόητο πως δεν μιλώ για τον Prince) παραμάσχαλα. Αυτό δεν σε χαλάει καθόλου, αντιθέτως δένουν όλα γλυκά.

Δεν έχω να πω κάτι αρνητικό για το "The Electric Lady" από όποια σκοπιά κι αν το πιάσω. Βασικά, γίνεται σχεδόν βαρετό να περιμένω πάντα κάτι καλό και πάντα να ακούω κάτι καλύτερο των προσδοκιών μου. Ίσως κάνω μια σελίδα στο facebook με τίτλο "Like this page if you are sick and tired of Janelle Monae always recording masterpieces".

AlunaGeorge - Body Music

Προσπαθώ να βρω το λόγο που κάθε φορά που κυκλοφορεί ένας δίσκος τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια, θα πρέπει να διαβάζω ή να ακούω το "The nest sth" ή "The next someone". Εύλογο, μιας και δεν υπάρχει παρθενογέννεση, μπλα, μπλα, μπλα. Και στην εποχή που όλοι έχουν soundcloud και κάνουν mixtapes και home παραγωγές, ακούς τόσα πράγματα, που αναγκαστικά η προσφορά είναι πιο μεγάλη από τη ζήτηση κι ο μόνος τρόπος να απορροφήσεις κάτι ή απλά να το κατανοήσεις, είναι να το βάλεις παράλληλα με κάτι που έχεις ήδη χωνέψει, δεκτό. Πού κολλάνε όλα αυτά με τους AlunaGeorge; Στο γεγονός ότι μου έχουν θυμίσει τουλάχιστον 548 πράγματα μέχρι το τέλος της ακρόασης, αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας δεν με ενοχλεί. Αντιθέτως, κατανοώ τις αναφορές τους, τα κλισέ τους, τη χιπστεροαισθητική τους, το hype τους κι όλα τα συναφή.

Το "Body Music" είναι ο δίσκος που θα έκανε η Rihanna κι η Lady GaGa σε ένα στούντιο μαζί με τον Frank Ocean και τον Weeknd, featuring Kanye West, Jessie Ware, Grimes, Portishead and Austra. Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα φρέσκο, παρά μόνο ο έξυπνος συνδυασμός από contemporary r'n'b και synth pop των 00's, από αυτή που ανεβαίνει στις πρώτες θέσεις των charts. Αυτό που κρατάει το album από μια mainstream αποδοχή είναι το εναλλακτικό προφίλ του ντουέτου και το περιέχόμενο της παραγράφου που ακολουθεί. Αν ήθελαν, θα μπορούσαν να προμοτάρουν έτσι το υλικό τους και να κάνουν πάταγο εν μία νυκτί.

Η επιθυμία της Aluna και του George να κυκλοφορήσουν κάτι πολύ big στα πλαίσια μιας νέας παρουσίας το 2013, τους οδήγησε στο να κάνουν μια κίνηση που τους κοστίζει πολύ. Κι αυτό είναι τριπλής προέκτασης: η μεγάλη διάρκεια του δίσκου, τα πολλά tracks (όχι απαραίτητα μείον - εδώ, κουραστικό) και μια mid-tempo γραμμή, που κακό δεν κάνει, αλλά αν δεν είσαι Jessie Ware να τη στηρίζεις φωνητικά ή αν δεν περιορίζεις τα κομμάτια στα 10-12, μπορεί να γίνει καταστροφική και να χαθούν διαμαντάκια κατά τη διάρκεια της ακρόασης ("Friends to lovers", "Bad idea"). Γιατί, για να είμαστε ειλικρινείς, μια καλή παραγωγή δεν μπορεί να σώσει μια κάτω του μετρίου σύνθεση ("Best be believing").

Ναι, καλό το "Body Music". Ακούγεται, είναι ο ήχος του σήμερα, γιατί το r'n'b είναι ξανά στη μόδα με τον Ocean, τον Migeul, τη Jessie και τα άλλα εναλλακτικά παιδιά της 90's αισθητικής, που χώνουν ηλεκτρονικά στη μουσική τους. Από εκεί και πέρα, καμία αποθέωση. Τα έχεις ακούσει ξανά όλα. Και στις καλύτερες στιγμές του ("You know you like it"), jaw-dropper δεν το λες.

Blogovision 2012 – No 1: Miguel – Kaleidoscope Dream

Αυτοί είναι οι 10 λόγοι που δεν πρέπει να σου αρέσει ο Miguel και το “Kaleidoscope Dream”:

10. Το όνομά του παραπέμπει σε Ισπανό πρωταγωνιστή σαπουνόπερας, πατέρα 17 παιδιών και βιαστή της Μαρία Ντε ΛαΒέγκα, που επιστρέφει, για να διεκδικήσει την περιουσία που του άφησε η μητέρα του, πριν φύγει για τη Βενεζουέλα.

9. Είναι πολύ γκόμενος, για να συμβαδίσει με την εναλλακτική μουσική.

8. Δεν φοράει γραβατούλες και ζακετούλες, όπως ο Frank Ocean, αλλά σκισμένα τζιν, οπότε ανήκει στην κατηγορία Contemporary R’n’B, που ίσως και να τη σνομπάρεις, χωρίς να την έχεις ακούσει.

7. Είναι μουνάκιας και το δηλώνει στα μισά του τραγούδια. Δεν γράφει για αιώνιες αγάπες, κοινωνικές αδικίες ή βασανισμένα παιδικά χρόνια, αλλά για το πώς μπορεί να περιποιηθεί μια γκόμενα σαν σκληρό ναρκωτικό.

6. Δεν είναι καλύτερος από τον Weeknd, απλά λίγο πιο cool.

5. Έχει ένα από τα πιο lame και ταυτόχρονα cult εξώφυλλα της φετινής δισκογραφίας, ενώ το μαλλί του έχει επιρροές από John Travolta στο “Grease”.

4. Έχεις ξανακούσει τον ίδιο δίσκο από D’Angelo, Maxwell, ακόμα και Prince.

3. Έχεις ξανακούσει τον ίδιο δίσκο από Erykah Badu, Mary J Blige και Kelis.

2. Το 4 και το 2 σημαίνουν ότι κοπιάρει, αλλά τουλάχιστον έχει καλό γούστο.

1. Δεν είναι indie.
